Slow start sinks Rock in 88-77 loss to Edinboro

A slow start proved to be too much to overcome for the Slippery Rock women’s basketball team in an 88-77 home loss to Edinboro Wednesday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - A slow start proved to be too much to overcome for the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team in an 88-77 home loss to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division foe Edinboro University Wednesday at Morrow Field House.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 10-15 overall and 8-11 in the PSAC West while Edinboro improves to 18-6 overall and 13-5 in league games with the win.

With two league games remaining in the season, Slippery Rock currently sits sixth in the PSAC West standings, a half game in back of Pitt-Johnstown and a full game ahead of seventh-place Gannon. UPJ will play Seton Hill tomorrow while Gannon is off until Saturday. The top six teams in the PSAC West standings at the end of the regular season earns conference tournament bids.

Slippery Rock outscored the Fighting Scots, 64-60, over the final three quarters of Wednesday's contest, but a 15-point first-quarter deficit along with 11 successful Fighting Scots 3-pointers ultimately was too big of a gap for The Rock to battle back from.

Ciara Patterson led three Rock players in double figures with a team-best 20 points. Patterson made three 3-pointers and went 7-for-14 from the field overall and 3-for-4 at the foul line in addition to making two steals defensively. Patterson ranks third in the PSAC this season with 62 3-pointers.

Brooke Hinderliter tallied her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Madison Johnson just missed out on a double-double of her own with 15 points and nine rebounds to go with a pair of steals. Johnson has scored at least 15 points in each of The Rock's last three games.

Karington Ketterer made her first start in a Rock uniform and responded with six points, two steals, one block and a career-high nine rebounds. Fellow starter Daeja Quick passed out four assists and grabbed four rebounds as well. Kasch Harris came off the bench to score four points and pull in four rebounds.

Morgan Henderson rounded out The Rock's top performers with seven points, five rebounds and one block. Henderson was playing in her 109th collegiate game Wednesday, the second most in program history. The school record for games played in a career is 110 by Melissa McKavish (1999-03).

As a team, Slippery Rock shot 36.6 percent (26-for-71) from the field overall, 20.8 percent (5-fr-24) from 3-point range and an impressive 80 percent (20-for-25) at the foul line. Slippery Rock totaled a season-high 49 rebounds and finished the game with a +13 rebounding advantage over the Fighting Scots.

Edinboro shot 41.8 percent (28-for-67) from the field, 36.7 percent (11-for-30) from long range and 80.8 percent (21-for-26) at the free throw line. The Fighting scots forced The Rock into 15 turnovers while making just 12 miscues of its own. Jontay Walton scored a game-high 24 points and Ciara Rosten registered a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Edinboro.

Slippery Rock returns to competition 1 p.m. Saturday on the road at Pitt-Johnstown in a game that will go a long way in deciding The Rock's postseason fate.
