Rock falls to #5 Gannon, 4-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team fell at home to No. 5 Gannon, 4-0, at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Saturday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team fell at home to No. 5 Gannon University, 4-0, at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, Gannon improves to 16-1-0 overall with a 9-1-0 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Slippery Rock ends the regular season at 8-8-2 overall with a 5-5-0 mark in division play.

Slippery Rock will now turn its sights towards the PSAC Tournament. The Rock will travel to Mercyhurst University for a quarterfinal match 1 p.m. Tuesday. The Rock and Lakers met twice this season, with each team taking the game on their home field. The 2019 season marks The Rock's return to the PSAC Tournament for the first time since winning the conference championship in 2015. Additionally, Slippery Rock's eight wins this season mark the most for a Rock men's soccer team since 2015. 

Prior to Saturday's contest against Gannon, Slippery Rock honored the 2019 senior class of Matt Hunsberger, Luke Picchi and Anthony Werth for their contributions to the program over their careers. 

Slippery Rock has improved its season win total in each of the last two years under second-year head coach Kevin Wilhelm. 
 
The Golden Knight offense was provided by a trio of Sergio Del Castillo, Lennox Crews and Joe Knox. Del Castillo opened the scoring with a goal just over a minute into the game with goalkeeper Chandler Hallwood providing the assist. Del Castillo added his second goal of the contest in the 17th minute on a pass from James Randall to extend the GU advantage to 2-0. Crews joined the scoring effort with a score in the 39th minute with the assist from Del Castillo.
 
Gannon secured the 4-0 victory in the 88th minute when Knox converted on a penalty kick chance.
 
Cory Olix led the SRU offense with two shots, both being on goal. Rock goalkeeper Matt Hunsberger finished with three saves and three goals allowed before being relieved by Derek Hoffman in the 51st minute. In relief, Hoffman added four saves while allowing a score.
 
Hallwood finished the afternoon with four saves in 90 clean minutes for Gannon in goal.
