Rock falls to West Chester in NCAA Tournament

The Slippery Rock women’s soccer team lost 4-2 to West Chester in the NCAA Tournament to conclude the 2019 season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team lost 4-2 to West Chester University in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to conclude the 2019 season Saturday afternoon at James Egli Field.

With the win, West Chester improves to 14-5-2 overall and advances to take on Bloomsburg University in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

Slippery Rock ends the 2019 season with an 18-4-0 record. The 18 wins are the most victories for The Rock in program history.

SRU also finishes the season with 58 goals scored, the second most in program history. The NCAA Tournament berth was the first for The Rock since the 2013 season along with clinching its first PSAC Championship since 2012.

Kayla Swope opened the scoring for SRU with her eighth goal of the season followed by Madison Johnson who scored for the second-consecutive game for what was her second score of the season. Georgia Nagucki assisted on both goals, bringing the sophomore's season assists total to four.

WCU opened the contest by attacking the Slippery Rock defense, earning two corner kick chances in the first four minutes of the contest before Jenna Peters netted her third goal of the season on a pass from Hannah Zach to give the Golden Rams a 1-0 advantage in the 5th minute.

West Chester continued to pressure the SRU back line following the score, firing five additional shots before converting on the sixth with Jenny Bail adding her eighth goal of the year with Peters providing the assist to extend the Golden Ram lead to 2-0 just 21 minutes into the game.

Less than a minute later, the Slippery Rock offense came alive when Swope dribbled three yards and lined a shot over the head of West Chester goalkeeper Hayley McGee to cut the WCU lead to 2-1 in the 22nd minute.

The Rock defense responded to the score by turning away the next six Golden Ram shots along with two corner kick attempts.

SRU took advantage of the bounce-back effort from its defense in the 33rd minute when Nagucki sent a perfect corner kick pass into the box that was headed home by Johnson to tie the game at 2-2.

A late corner kick attempt by West Chester was turned away by Slippery Rock to send the game to halftime tied at two apiece.

Coming out of the break, WCU sent immediate pressure to The Rock defense, sending a shot just wide before Zach converted on her 12th score of the season to give West Chester a 3-2 lead in the 59th minute.

Zach would extend the Golden Ram advantage to 4-2 in the 69th minute on a successful header home from a Peters pass.

Despite adjustments from the Slippery Rock defense, West Chester would maintain possession throughout nearly the entire second half, limiting the offensive opportunities for SRU.

An Ashley Rea shot in the 75th minute was turned away by McGee in what was the last real opportunity for the Slippery Rock offense, securing a 4-2 victory for the Golden Rams.

Johnson led the way for the SRU offense with three shots and a goal scored while Swope added a score on her only shot of the day. Nagucki guided The Rock offense, assisting on both goals while adding a shot on goal.

Shannon McIntyre added two shots for Slippery Rock while Jordyn Minda and Rea each had one shot. Rock goalkeeper Emma Yoder finished the afternoon with six saves.

In goal for West Chester, McGee finished with five saves in the winning effort. WCU held the advantage over SRU in total shots (21-9), shots on goal (10-7) and corner kick attempts (8-5).
