FROSTBURG, Md. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team recorded a 3-0 non-conference victory on the road at Frostburg State University Tuesday night.
Â
Slippery Rock (3-8) controlled possession for the majority of the night en route to its third victory of the season.
Â
The Rock received goals from
Jessie Trube,
Emily Polakovsky and
Courtney Page.
Brenna McGovern-Lind,
Addy Ross and
Mikaela Hettel all picked up assists in the win as well.
Â
Defensively, goalkeepers
Hannah Nurse and
Maddie Murphy combined to give SRU its third shutout of 2019. Nurse stopped Frostburg State's (0-11) only shot on goal before giving way to Murphy for the game's final seven minutes to finish off the shutout.
Â
Slippery Rock pressured the FSU defense early and often, but the Bobcats managed to fend off eight shots and four penalty corners over the opening 30 minutes and appeared poised to head into halftime tied with The Rock at 0-0. However, SRU earned a penalty corner with 2.6 seconds left in the second quarter which in turn led to another untimed corner.
Â
SRU proceeded to make the most of its final opportunity of the first half as McGovern-Lind received the entry pass from
Kalie Reed and then made a perfect pass to Trube who in turn shot a rocket from the top of the circle past FSU goalie Sierra Smizer to give SRU a 1-0 lead. The goal was Trube's team-leading fifth of the season.
Â
Frostburg State attempted to rally coming out of the halftime break by drawing a penalty corner 20 seconds into the third quarter, but The Rock's stout defense blocked one shot and Nurse immediately saved the attempted rebound to end the threat.
Â
Polakovsky put The Rock up 2-0 with her second goal of the season early in the 42nd minute on an assist by Ross and Page added an insurance goal off of a pass from Hettel in the 50th minute to give SRU an insurmountable three-goal advantage. Page's score was her second of the year.
Â
For the game, SRU held advantages over Frostburg State (0-11) in total shots (22-5), shots on goal (17-1) and penalty corners (12-3).
Lauren Marks registered a team-high four shots on goal followed by three attempts on target by Trube. Page, Polakovsky,
Kayla Ulrich and
Jordyn Isner all collected two shots on goal as well with Ross and
Sayler Burke tallying one shot on goal apiece also.
