GREENSBURG, Pa. - Kayla Ulrich scored two goals and had two assists to lead the Slippery Rock University field hockey team to a 4-3 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference victory at Seton Hill University Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Slippery Rock improves to 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the PSAC on the season with the win while the Griffins drop to 1-14 overall and 0-9 in league games after the one-goal defeat.
Â
One of the top scorers in program history, Ulrich snapped a personal streak of 10 games without a point in fine fashion Tuesday with the top offensive output of her collegiate career. Her six points against the Griffins represented the second-highest single-game point total by a Rock player in program history.
Â
With one game remaining in her junior season, Ulrich is now tied with Marlene Hall (1985-88) for second place on The Rock's career goals ledger with 25, eight behind
Megan McKay (2013-16) for the program record. Ulrich also ranks second in Slippery Rock history for points in a career (58) and seventh in assists (eight).
Â
Abby McKay and
Lauren Marks accounted for Slippery Rock's other two goals against the Griffins while
Courtney Page was credited with her third assist of the season.
Â
All three Rock goalkeepers appeared in Tuesday's game.
Hannah Nurse played the first half, allowing two goals, before giving way to
Maddie Murphy who did not allow a score 25:49 of action.
Taylor Page concluded the day in the cage for SRU as the freshman played the final 4:11 of the fourth quarter, making one save and giving up one goal. Murphy earned her second win of the season.
Â
Both teams' offenses came alive in the second quarter following a scoreless opening 15 minutes of competition. McKay produced the game's first goal when she tipped home an Ulrich shot attempt in the 17th minute.
Â
Seton Hill quickly responded with a goal of its own at 17:57 only for The Rock to answer back less than a minute later when Ulrich finished a ball past a swarm of SHU defenders in front of the cage at 18:46. However, SHU would send the game into halftime knotted at 2-2 when Colleen Roy scored her first goal of the season in the 24th minute.
Â
Slippery Rock put any thoughts of a Seton Hill comeback to rest with consecutive goals in the second half. Ulrich posted her second score of the day just one minute into the third quarter followed by a very important insurance goal from Marks in the 56th minute.
Â
The Griffins managed to make it a one-goal game when Roy tallied her second goal of the contest at 58:35, but a final shot attempt by SHU's leading scorer Wynnsome Gadson with two seconds left in regulation was saved by T. Page to seal The Rock's victory.
Â
For the game, Slippery Rock held advantages over the Griffins in total shots (13-6), shots on goal (10-4) and penalty corners (13-5).
Â
In addition to her six points, Ulrich also led SRU with a team-high three shots on goal. C. Page added two shots on goal as well with McKay, Marks,
Addy Ross,
Mikaela Hettel and
Jessie Trube also adding one shot on target apiece.
Â
Slippery Rock will close out the 2019 season with a home game 4 p.m. Friday against No. 5 Shippensburg University at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
