Rock secures PSAC West victory vs. Seton Hill, 1-0

Mo Kanani scored for the second-consecutive game and Matt Hunsberger recorded his second-straight shutout to secure a 1-0 home victory for Slippery Rock over Seton Hill at James Egli Field Saturday afternoon.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Mo Kanani scored for the second-consecutive game and Matt Hunsberger recorded his second-straight shutout to secure a 1-0 home victory for the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team over Seton Hill University at James Egli Field Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, SRU improves to 6-6-2 overall with a 3-3-0 record in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division. Seton Hill falls to 6-7-1 with a 2-3-1 mark in division play.
 
After defeating the Griffins, The Rock are now in third place in the PSAC Western Division standings with nine points.
 
At the end of the season, the top-three teams based on point total in both the PSAC West and PSAC East will advance to the conference tournament.
 
The contest was largely a defensive battle between Slippery Rock and Seton Hill, with the Griffins turning away the first nine shot attempts by SRU. The Rock matched the defensive effort of SHU, spoiling all eight first half shots by Seton Hill.
 
SRU came alive on offense when Kanani played a free kick pass from Brian McCarthy through the Griffin defense and into the goal for his second score of the season, giving SRU the 1-0 advantage in the 44th minute.
 
Following the score, a stellar defensive effort from The Rock ensued, allowing only five second-half shots and four corner kick attempts. Hunsberger led the way for SRU on defense with five saves.
 
A pair of corner kick attempts at the 80:25 and 80:53 mark by Seton Hill were turned away by Slippery Rock to secure the 1-0 conference win for SRU.
 
Abdallah Bangura tied his season-high in total shots with six, four being on goal. Alejandro Fernandez was second for The Rock with three shots while Kanani had two shots and the game-winning score.
 
Hunsberger added his second-consecutive shutout with five saves for SRU. Seton Hill goalkeeper Austin Iddon finished the afternoon with seven saves and a goal allowed.
 
Slippery Rock returns to action when hosts California University (Pa.) for a PSAC West matchup 4 p.m. Wednesday at James Egli Field. 
 
GAME NOTES
• The 1-0 win over Seton Hill marks the sixth shutout victory of 2019 for SRU, the most for a Rock men's soccer team since the 2015 season.
 
• With the victory over SHU, The Rock earned its sixth win of the season, matching its win total from all of last season. The victory marks the quickest Slippery Rock has gotten to six wins in a season since the 2015.
 
• Slippery Rock has won two-straight one-goal games after previously having a 1-5-2 record in games decided by one goal or less this season.
