Rock falls against Pitt-Johnstown, 79-75

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team dropped a 79-75 decision at home against Pitt-Johnstown Wednesday night at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team fell at home to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, 79-75, Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest at Morrow Field House.
 
The Rock fall to 8-9 overall and 6-5 in the PSAC West while UPJ improves to 10-8 overall and own a 6-5 record in league games.
 
In what was a tightly played game throughout, SRU tried to make a push late, but was unable to overcome four-point deficit missing its last four shots from the floor. The Mountain Cats never had a double-digit lead in the contest, but were able to hold-off Slippery Rock in the final minutes en route to the victory.
 
Both teams shot extremely well from the floor as the Mountain Cats shot 49.0 percent (25-for-51) and The Rock shot 43.1 percent (28-for-68) from the field.
 
The difference in the game turned out to be at the charity stripe with UPJ shooting 76.7 percent as they were 23-for-30 from the line.
 
Despite the loss, four players finished in double-figures for Slippery Rock in scoring for just the third time this season.
 
Senior guard Ciara Patterson's 21 points were a season-high as she was 7-for-13 from the floor and 5-for-10 from long range. She also tallied three rebounds.
 
Senior forward Morgan Henderson registered her fifth double-double of the 2018-19 season shooting 5-for-13 from the floor and pulling down a team-leading 12 boards.
 
Junior forward Madison Johnson posted an impressive 15 points off the bench shooting 6-for-12 from the floor. She also recorded two blocks and a steal, and was 3-for-4 from the charity stripe.
 
As for Junior guard Brooke Hinderliter, she came into the contest needing 20 points to record the 1,000th point of her career. She finished with 15 points finishing five points shy of the mark, and dished out three assists. She also registered one block and a steal.
 
Pitt-Johnstown was paced by junior forward Gabrielle Smith who scored 23 points shooting 5-for-7 from the floor, was 1-for-1 from three-point range and was 12-for-16 at the free throw line.
 
SRU will look to bounce back on the road Saturday when it travels to Edinboro University in a PSAC West matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
