Rock loses to Seton Hill, 73-65

The Slippery Rock women’s basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 73-65 loss Wednesday night at home against Seton Hill.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak snapped in a 73-65 loss Wednesday against Seton Hill University at Morrow Field House in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 6-5 on the season overall and 4-1 in the PSAC West while Seton Hill improves to 9-3 overall and 3-2 in league games.

Seton Hill, which was ahead for the majority of the game, led by as many as 16 points with nine minutes to play in the third quarter before SRU mounted its would-be comeback that saw The Rock go on an impressive 38-17 run over the following 13:15 of regulation to completely erase its deficit and push its edge all the way out to 62-57 with just 5:45 remaining in regulation.

Six Rock players contributed points over the run with the duo of redshirt senior guard Ciara Patterson and junior forward LeeAnn Gibson pacing the pack with nine points apiece.

However, the comeback victory was not to be as late shooting woes, which plagued Slippery Rock for much of the night, ultimately proved too much to overcome. SRU made just one of its final 11 field goal attempts while also only going 1-for-3 from the free throw line late. Conversely, The Griffins were able to salvage a win by connecting on four of their final seven field goal attempts and six of 10 free throws in the game's final moments to earn the eight-point victory.

In a performance rarely seen at Slippery Rock, senior forward Morgan Henderson accounted for nearly half of The Rock's rebounds as she pulled in 22 boards, the second most in a single-game in program history. Henderson, who also scored six points and blocked one shot, became just the sixth player at SRU all-time to register at least 20 rebounds in a single-game.

The last player to have at least 20 rebounds in a single-game was Sasha Sales, who tallied 21 rebounds against Pitt-Johnstown in 2008-09.

Four players finished with at least 10 points for Slippery Rock Wednesday. Patterson scored a team-high 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting overall. Patterson, who converted three of her six 3-point attempts, also came up with a pair of steals and one blocked shot.

Junior guard Brooke Hinderliter finished with 15 points while sophomore guard Daeja Quick and Gibson rounded out The Rock's leading scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Quick also dished out a team-high five assists. Madison Johnson led all reserves with seven points and six rebounds.

For the game, Slippery Rock shot just 31.5 percent (23-for-73) from the field overall and 59.1 percent (13-for-22) at the foul line. SRU did hold advantages over Seton Hill in total rebounds (48-47), offensive rebounds (13-7), steals (6-5) while committing a season-low 10 turnovers.

The Griffins were led by Megan Marecic, who posted a double-double of 20 points and 12 rebounds. Lexi Civittolo scored what turned out to be the game-winning basket when she made a 3-pointer that gave SHU a 65-62 lead that it would never relinquish with 3:06 left to play

As a team, Seton Hill made only nine turnovers, shot 39.1 percent (25-for-64) from the field overall and 64.3 percent (18-for-28) from the free throw line.

Slippery Rock will look to rebound from the loss with a victory 1 p.m. Saturday at Mercyhurst University in Erie, Pennsylvania.
