BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Lacey Cohen of the Slippery Rock University women's tennis team continued her impressive run at the 2018 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Individual Championships with two more wins Sunday at the Burt Reese Tennis Courts on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
Â
Cohen will now face Katya Minchenkova of Indiana University (Pa.) in the singles championship match 9 a.m. Monday.
Â
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native began Sunday with a walkover victory in the quarterfinals against Emily Gordon of Mercyhurst to setup a showdown against Edinboro veteran Laura Lopez in the semifinals.
Â
Cohen, who was 2-0 against Lopez all-time entering Sunday's match, was able to stay perfect against her counterpart and propel herself into the championship round with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
Â
Sunday's final will mark the first time that Cohen and Minchenkova have squared off. A junior from Mytishchi, Russia, Minchenkova was first team All-PSAC West selection last year. She has a career singles record of 36-17.
Â
No stranger to deep tournament runs, Cohen advanced to quarterfinals of the PSAC Individual Championships last year before losing to eventual champion Saoia Gomez de Segura of Mercyhurst.
Â
One of the top Rock tennis athletes in recent memory, Cohen has already earned All-PSAC West accolades three times over her career (singles twice, doubles once), was named the PSAC West Freshman of the Year in 2016-17 and has recorded 70 total collegiate victories.
Â
A win by Cohen against Minchenkova on Monday would give Slippery Rock its first PSAC singles champion. The last Rock athletes to win individual PSAC titles came in 2004 when Jessica Bungo and Ashley Michaux won the doubles championship.
