Rock concludes time at regional championships

The Slippery Rock women’s tennis team wrapped up its time at the 2018 ITA Atlantic Region Championships in Erie, Pennsylvania on Sunday.

ERIE, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University women's tennis team wrapped up its time at the 2018 ITA Atlantic Region Championships in Erie, Pennsylvania on Sunday.
 
All seven embers of the 2018-19 Slippery Rock roster competed in the three-day event that featured the top tennis athletes in the Atlantic Region competing for one of four titles (A-Draw singles, A-Draw doubles, B-Draw singles, B-Draw doubles).
 
Junior Viola Lugmayr led the way for Slippery Rock by advancing to the third round of the singles A-Draw. She began the tournament by beating Chloe Riley of West Liberty 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 followed by a 7-6, 6-3 triumph against Salem's Ana Kunic. However, Lugmay's run came to an end in a 6-1, 6-0 third-round loss to Julia Newman of Indiana (Pa.).
 
Junior Lacey Cohen and freshman Lois Page competed in the A-Draw singles tournament as well, but both athlete's suffered first-round losses. Cohen dropped a narrow decision to Fairmont State's Trinite' Klamadji 4-6, 7-5, 13-11 and Page fell to Katya Minchenkova of IUP 6-4, 7-6. Both Cohen and Page also went 1-1 in the A-Draw consolation bracket as well.

In A-Draw doubles play, Lugmayr and Page beat West Chester's duo of Rylee Power and Leandra Roelker, 8-7, but couldn't get by Charleston's Elise Eddwards and Silvia Slusarcuic (8-5). Cohen and sophomore Olivia Warner  lost to top-seeded Katie Swann and Kristine Gegsehidze of Charleston, 8-1.

In the B-Draw bracket, sophomore Lauren Fadden, who advanced to the finals in tournament a season ago, defeated Charleston's Caisie Adcock in the opening round 6-3, 6-0 before losing in the second round to Mercyhurst's Naomi Jahr 6-4, 6-2.
 
Sophomore Amy Varckette was also successful in her first round contest, besting Bailey Edeburn of Fairmont State 6-4, 5-6, 11-9, but was downed in the second round by IUP's Maria Magraner 6-3, 6-2.
 
Olivia Warner won her play-in match on Friday 6-4, 6-2 against Kristina Vuksanovic of Salem, but was unable to get by Mercyhurst's Athina Tsagkaraki in first round, losing 6-1, 6-3. Warner went on to split a pair of matches in the B-Draw singles consolation bracket.
 
Senior Allie Welch rounded out The Rock's B-Draw entries with a 6-4, 3-6, 11-9 loss to Sophie Bygrave of Bloomsburg. Welch and Fadden also lost to Bygrave and Eva Garcia in B-Draw doubles bracket, 8-4 and went 1-1 in the consolation bracket.
 
Slippery Rock will play its first team match of the year when it hosts Daemen College 12 p.m. Sept. 23 at the SRU Tennis Courts in a non-conference showdown.
