SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated Cedarville University Saturday afternoon at James Egli Field, 1-0, after a score by
Luke Picchi and a shutout in goal from
Matt Hunsberger.
Â
SRU got on the board early at 11:13 when
Alexander Vilchek played a ball into the box for Picchi who finished it in right side of the net for the score. It was Picchi's second goal of the season and Vilchek's second assist of 2018.
Â
Both teams only fired three shots in the first half and Slippery Rock took its lead into halftime.
Â
In the second period, The Rock nearly made it a 2-0 advantage when
Omar Bangura fired a shot that went wide at 65:05.
Â
Other action did not really come until 82:31 when Cedarville's Keegan Wondergem sent a header on target, but Hunsberger made the save.
Â
At 85:57, CU's Conner Hughes sent a shot from the right of the box and Hunsberger saved it. Just seconds later, Derek Braak drove one from about 15 yards out that nearly went in, but Hunsberger made a leaping punch save, keeping the score, 1-0, in favor of The Rock.
Â
Slippery Rock's defense held off the rest of the Yellow Jackets' attack en route to the victory.
Â
