Rock loses to Washington & Jefferson, 1-0

The Slippery Rock field hockey team had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 1-0 loss against Washington & Jefferson Wednesday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team had its three-game winning streak snapped in a 1-0 loss against Washington & Jefferson College Wednesday night at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Slippery Rock's record now stands at 3-1 while Washington & Jefferson continues its undefeated season, standing 4-0.

SRU controlled possession for much of the game and finished the night with advantages over Washington & Jefferson in total shots (5-3) and penalty corners (8-3).

Senior Hannah Downing recorded a team-high two shots for Slippery Rock with senior Sam Geroski, sophomore Abby McKay and junior Madison Krajewski all taking one attempt as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maddie Murphy played all 70 minutes Wednesday, stopping two shots and allowing one goal, dropping her record to 3-1 this season.

Geroski, McKay and Downing all fired off shots during a four-minute stretch early in the game (9:14 – 13:21), but two of the attempts were blocked by W&J defenders and the third was saved by W&J sophomore goalie Rena Israel.

Krajewski wrapped up the first half firing one attempt wide. The Rock led Washington & Jefferson with a 5-1 shot advantage in the first half, but neither team could land one in the cage.

SRU continued to be the aggressors going into the second half, but with a quick turn of events W&J landed a penalty corner 11 minutes into the second half that initiated the first goal of the game. Off of the corner, Karr received a pass coming from senior Rachel Buyan then lined up a shot that was kicked saved by Murphy allowing Buyan the opportunity to rebound the attempt and score to the left of the cage.

While SRU's defense did not allow the Presidents to extend their lead any further, The Rock was unable to record a shot over the final 24 minutes in regulation as SRU suffered its first loss of the season.

The Rock will continue their two-game homestand when they face Pennsylvania State Conference Rival Indiana University (Pa.) in a non-conference game 7 p.m. Wednesday Sept. 19 at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
