Rock defeats Charleston, 12-6

Slippery Rock improved to 5-0 in non-conference games and 11-4 overall with a 12-6 win over Charleston Friday.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's lacrosse team remained unbeaten in non-conference play in 2018 with a 12-6 victory over the University of Charleston Friday evening from Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock (11-4) scored the first seven goals of the game and were never really threatened in the second half on the way to improving to 5-0 in non-conference games. Charleston (7-6) got a stellar effort from its goalie early in the game, but couldn't keep pace with SRU posting a 39-16 advantage in shots.

Slippery Rock also recorded a 35-20 advantage in ground balls and scored on 5-of-13 free position attempts. Charleston was just 1-of-6 on free position tries and finished the game with 27 turnovers. Both teams were credited with 10 draw controls.

Rock goalie Emily Bitka was outstanding early in the game, recording saves on the first seven shots on target to allow SRU to build its early lead. Bitka allowed just one goal to go along with those seven saves before being relieved at halftime. Haley Barrett played the final 30 minutes, allowing five goals and recording one save.

The Rock attack was led by Kelly Muenster with three goals and Tia Torchia with one goal and two assists. Francesca Lindelow added two goals and Erin Brown scored one goal and handed out one assist to cap the multi-point scorers.

Bre Vodde, Tori Penders, Sami Gentzler, Audrey Napp  and Caitlyn Byerly all scored one goal and ShyAnne Toomer finished with one assist to round out the point scorers.

Rachel Shaw and Danie Porath each finished with five ground balls to lead the defense.

Charleston was led by its goalie, Kyra Tye, who finished with 16 saves, including 10 in the first half alone. She stopped the first seven shots on goal before SRU finally broke the gates open 8:12 into the game.

The Golden Eagles got four goals from Aryanna Jones and one each from Emma Renda and Brianna Rock.

Friday's game marked the final non-conference game of the season for Slippery Rock, which will close the regular season with a pair of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference games next week. Gannon will visit Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game before SRU travels to Shippensburg next Saturday. Wins in each of those games would bring SRU to 13-4 on the year and establish a new school record for wins in a single-season.
