CLERMONT, Fla. – The Slippery Rock University softball team was shut out by Bridgeport University 1-0 to begin the day, and then lost 5-2 to Le Moyne College Saturday morning.
The Rock scattered six hits in game one, but was unable to score on Bridgeport's Ashley Eisnor.
Brooke Dawson was phenomenal in the circle for SRU, but unfortunately took the loss.
Slippery Rock was able to tally two runs against Le Moyne, but the Dolphins' managed to push across five and hold on for the 5-2 win.
GAME ONE: Bridgeport 1 – Slippery Rock 0
Both pitchers were cruising along throughout the contest until the top of the fifth inning when Bridgeport was able to score a run and eventually hold on for the win.
Neither team tallied a hit until the third inning until Bridgeport roped a single in the top half of the third, but was unable to score.
SRU answered back with a hit apiece from
Caitlyn MacKelvey and
Emily Nagle. Unfortunately, with two outs and two runners on,
Megan Brown hit a hard line drive that was snagged by the shortstop to end the frame.
Slippery Rock had runners on second and third again in the fourth when
Becca Roesch singled to begin the inning. After
Lauren Hawley reached on a fielder's choice,
Allie Fischer would later ground out to move the runners over. With two outs,
McKenzie Garland flied out to right field to end the inning.
Bridgeport later able to score in the top of the fifth when Allison Luzzi roped an RBI triple with two outs to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead.
The Rock got two runners on for
Emily Nagle in the bottom of the seventh inning and she nearly won the game when she laced a ball down the left field line, but it went just foul. Nagle then reached on a fielder's choice, and Eisnor would work out of danger to pick up the win.
Eisnor (2-0) earned the win hurling a complete-game shutout scattering six hits and punching out five.
Dawson (2-3) tallied the loss surrendering one run on four hits, while striking out nine. Her nine punch outs are a season-high and the most she's had in a game since she struck out 10 against Clarion March 30, 2016.
Bridgeport improves to 3-2, while The Rock falls to 7-3.
GAME TWO: Le Moyne 5 – Slippery Rock 2
In game two, Slippery Rock was able get on the board early, but Le Moyne recorded three runs in the first, one in the second, one in the fourth and hold on for the win.
Nagle walked to start the game and Brown then bunted her over to second base. Following the sac bunt,
Becca Roesch singled to drive in Nagle and make it a 1-0 game.
The Dolphins answered back in the bottom of the first after back-to-back walks to start the frame. Tess Andrews then singled to load the bases. Alexis Eastman later ripped a single and drove in a run. After the Dolphins scored another run on a wild pitch, Jilian McManus ripped an RBI double to make it a 3-1 game.
After Le Moyne made it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the second, The Rock got one back in the top of the fourth. Myers led off the inning with a single and
Allie Fischer blasted a triple that scored Myers to make it 4-2.
The Dolphins then added another in the bottom of the fourth and Slippery Rock tried to mount a comeback in the top of the sixth. Following a leadoff walk by Myers, Fischer singled to put two on with no outs. After back-to-back outs,
Leah Vith came in to pinch hit and drew a walk to load the bases. Nagle then lined out to third to end the threat.
Slippery Rock went one-two-three in the seventh and Le Moyne held on for the 5-2 victory.
Lauren Nichols (2-0) earned the win for the Dolphins going 5.0 innings, surrendering two runs on four hits and punching out five.
Andria Copelli (2-1) registers the loss going 1.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits.
Camie Shumaker entered the game as a reliever and went 4.2 innings surrendering one run on three hits and striking out two.
Le Moyne is now 14-4 on the season, while SRU drops to 7-4.
Slippery Rock continues their spring break contests Sunday when it plays Illinois-Springfield at 10 a.m. to start the day, and then has a break before playing Saint Michael's at 2:30 p.m.
