Rock splits day two of Snowbird Freeze Out

The Slippery Rock softball team split games against Wilmington and Felician today during the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Slippery Rock University softball team split games against Wilmington University and Felician College today during the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
 
Following a 5-0 loss to Wilmington, SRU's bats came alive to score 11 runs against Felician Saturday afternoon for an 11-3 victory. Kailey Myers tallied four hits and five RBI on the day. Andria Copelli recorded her first victory of the year in the circle.
 
Slippery Rock's Saturday split gave the team a 3-1 record to start a season.
 
GAME ONE: Wilmington 5 – Slippery Rock 0
Wilmington got after it early scoring runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Starting pitcher Makayla McCarthy hurled her first shutout of the season in. Slippery Rock only mustered three hits in the 5-0 loss.
 
In the bottom of the first inning, the Wildcats scored two runs off a sac fly from Lauren Lopez that scored Rosa'Lynn Burton. McCarthy later doubled scoring Kiana BrodersonJones to give WU a 2-0 lead.
 
Burton also tallied an RBI single in third inning to make it 4-0 Wilmington. The Wildcats registered one run in the fifth and held on for the 5-0 win.
 
Emily Nagle, Megan Brown and Myers recorded one hit apiece in the loss.
 
Brooke Dawson (1-1) earned her first loss of the season after surrendering five runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
 
GAME TWO: Slippery Rock 11 – Felician 3 (5 inn.)
Following the scoring drought in game one, Slippery Rock exploded for 11 runs in game two. It was a contest that saw no shortage of power as The Rock slugged three home runs.
 
SRU got on the board early when Becca Roesch walked with two outs. Lauren Hawley drove her in with an RBI double. Myers then drove in Hawley to make it a 2-0 start.
 
Felician then scored a run in the second inning, but SRU would tack on three more in the third. After Nagle led off the inning and reached on an error, Hawley walked to put two runners on. Myers then roped one over the wall for a three-run tater to make it a 5-1 Rock lead.
 
In the bottom half of the third inning, Felician tallied another run to cut The Rock lead to three.
 
Slippery Rock would later pile on four more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Alexa Guglielmino led off the inning with a single and later scored on a two-run dinger from Nagle. Later in the inning, Myers drove in another run on an RBI single that scored Julia Cepis. Allie Fischer would reach on an error and would get cut down advancing. Before the inning ended however, pinch runner Cortney Claypoole would score to make it a 9-2 lead.
 
Guglielmino would hit a solo homer with one out in the fifth, and later a sac fly by Roesch would score Caitlyn MacKelvey to make it an 11-2 game.
 
In the bottom half of the fifth, Felician tallied just one more run, but Paige Flore would enter to get the final three outs of the game. Slippery Rock held on for the 11-3 victory.
 
Copelli (1-0) earned her first win of the season going 4.0 innings allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits, while also striking out two.
 
The Rock's final game of the Snowbird Freeze Out Tournament will be played tomorrow at 10 a.m. with a matchup against New Haven.
