Rock drops season finale to #8 Millersville, 3-0

The Slippery Rock field hockey team lost its final game of the 2018 season, 3-0, to No. 8 Millersville Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost its final game of the 2018 season, 3-0, to No. 8 Millersville University Friday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The Rock exits the season with a 6-12 overall record and a 1-9 mark in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. Millersville will enter the PSAC Tournament at 13-5 overall and 7-3 in league games.

Slippery Rock hung tight with the nationally ranked Marauders for the first half of play as the two teams entered the halftime break tied at 0-0. However, Millersville put the game away by scoring three goals within a six-minute stretch early in the second half to build an insurmountable lead.

For the game, Millersville held advantages over SRU in total shots (19-6), shots on goal (13-4) and penalty corners (5-4).

SRU was led offensively with one shot on goal apiece by the quartet of sophomore Kayla Ulrich, sophomore Courtney Page, senior Hannah Downing and senior Liz Wolfe.

Goalkeeper Maddie Murphy stopped eight shots over 70 minutes while the duo of Wolfe and junior Jordan Barnes each made one defensive save as well.

Lexi Robinson assisted on two of Millersville's goals. Sol Ortiz-Kreiner, Asia Weaver and Aliza Mizak accounted for MU's scores.

Friday's game was the final in the careers of Downing, Wolfe, Hannah Simone, Rachel Ivins, Sam Geroski and Tara Maloney. One of the younger teams in the PSAC this season, SRU will return 12 players who played in at least 14 games this year in 2019.

NOTES
-Wolfe's defensive save was her PSAC-best fifth of the year. She leaves The Rock tied for third in program history with Erin Moran (2008-11) for third place in program history with 18 defensive saves.

-While not the season SRU was hoping for, its six wins in 2018 are still tied for The Rock's fourth highest single-season victory total in the last 19 seasons.

-Ulrich will enter her junior season in 2019 ranked sixth in program history for points in a career (42) and sixth in goals scored (19).

-While her official collegiate career is over, Wolfe will still represent The Rock one more time as she has already been selected to play in the 2018 NFHCA Senior All-Star Game Nov. 30 on the campus of Duquesne University at Arthur J. Rooney Athletic Field in conjunction with the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships that are being hosted by SRU.

-Friday was The Rock's Make-A-Wish Game. Over the last three weeks, and culminating with today's game, SRU has been holding a fundraiser with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Slippery Rock easily exceeded its $500 goal and ended up raising $1,075 for the cause.
