Rock falls to Walsh in double OT, 1-0

The Slippery Rock men’s soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to Walsh Tuesday in double overtime, 1-0. SRU’s George Oakley tallied three shots and one on goal in the loss.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team dropped a non-conference contest to Walsh University Tuesday in double overtime, 1-0. George Oakley tallied three shots and one on goal in the loss.
 
After SRU recording just one shot in a scoreless first half, The Rock rallied back to fired nine shots in the second period. Walsh put five shots on the scoresheet in the second period, but both teams remained level, 0-0, at the end of regulation.
 
It wasn't until the second overtime period with one minute and 44 seconds remaining in the contest that Walsh scored the golden goal.
 
SRU's only shot in the first period was at 12:50 when Cory Olix played a ball wide of the net.
 
Walsh nearly broke through in the 37th minute when Mitchell Baxter sent a shot on target, but Rock goalkeeper Matt Hunsberger made the save.
 
The second period was quite the spectacle as Slippery Rock and Walsh rattled off a combined 14 shots.
 
In the first five minutes of the second half, Hayden Seifert, Justin Minda, Alexander Vilchek and Oakley all fired shots, with Vilchek's and Oakley's being on goal, but neither of them could find the back of the net.
 
SRU's last chance to win the contest at the end of regulation came when Seifert sent a shot just wide of the goal to close out the period at 90:00.

The Cavaliers nearly won the contest just 29 seconds into overtime when Camden Davis received a cross into the box and he fired a header that just went off the crossbar.
 
At 98:44, Kenton Keeslar drove one just wide of the net, and both teams remained tied at 0-0 after first overtime.
 
With one minute and 44 seconds left in the contest, Walsh's Alex Jackson dribbled the ball into the box for Walsh and he sent a shot from 15 yards out to put it past Hunsberger for the goal and the victory.
 
Slippery Rock falls to 4-7-2 overall while the Cavaliers improve to 7-6-1.
 
Hunsberger made three saves in net for Slippery Rock.

GAME NOTES
  • Slippery Rock's all-time series record against Walsh is now 0-2-0.
  • The Rock outshot Walsh 9-5 in the second period.
  • Vilchek and Oakley tallied one shot on goal apiece.
  • The loss was SRU's first overtime loss of the 2018 season. SRU had previously played two overtime games, both resulting in draws.
