Rock cruises to 68-53 win at Clarion

Brooke Hinderliter scored 18 points and Madison Johnson chipped in 17 more in a 68-53 victory for the Slippery Rock women’s basketball team over Clarion Wednesday night.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Brooke Hinderliter scored 18 points and Madison Johnson added 17 more to lead the Slippery Rock University women's basketball team to a 68-53 victory at Clarion University Wednesday night.

Wednesday's win snapped Slippery Rock's two-game losing streak and improved SRU's record to 8-7 on the season overall and 6-4 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition. For the first time in 16 seasons, SRU has now won at least six conference games in four consecutive years. Clarion dropped to 7-9 overall and 2-8 in league games in the loss.

Hinderliter and Johnson combined to shoot 13-for-27 from the field on a night in which the entire Rock roster shot an efficient 46.4 percent (26-for-56) from the field. Hinderliter just missed out on a double-double with eight rebounds to go with two assists. Johnson posted seven assists and five rebounds in addition to her impressive scoring output.

Krista Pietropola came just shy of a double-double as well with an 11-point, eight-rebound performance. Pietropola went 4-for-8 from the field overall and 3-for-6 from 3-point range.

Morgan Henderson added nine points, four rebounds and one block while Sierra Fordham dished out six assists to go with four steals on the defensive end of the floor to round out The Rock's top contributors.

SRU rocketed out to an early 20-9 lead after one quarter of play thanks in large part to an early nine points from Henderson. Clarion rallied back by outscoring The Rock, 19-9, in the second quarter to trim The Rock's lead down to just 29-28 going into the halftime break.

However, any thoughts of a Clarion comeback were dashed in the third quarter as SRU came out of the break to score 18 of 26 points in the third quarter to take a comfortable 47-36 advantage into the fourth quarter en route to the 15-point triumph.

14 of Hinderliter's 18 points came in the second half.

Clarion shot just 27.1 percent from the field overall, 20.7 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from free throw line. The Golden Eagles forced The Rock into 22 turnovers, but committed 21 miscues of their own. Yindah Bobo led Clarion with 16 points and six rebounds.

Slippery Rock scored 24 points off of Clarion turnovers. SRU also held advantages over the Golden Eagles in points in the paint (32-14) and fast break points (10-0).

SRU returns home to host Manfield University 1 p.m. Saturday at Morrow Field House.
