Rock falls to Mansfield, 1-0

Slippery Rock lost to Mansfield, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference matchup at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium to fall to 2-1 on the season.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to Mansfield University, 1-0, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

The loss drops The Rock's record to 2-1 on the year, with Mansfield improving to 2-1 as well with the win.

Five players recorded shots for The Rock, with Kayla Ulrich leading the team with three. Alyssa Castle, Liz Wolfe, Hannah Simone and Kayla Mack all added one apiece.

For the third consecutive game, goalkeepers Nicole Bream and Maddie Murphy split playing time. Bream started the game, allowing one goal while recording three saves. Murphy entered to start the second half, recording five saves in her 35 minutes of play.

Larissa Motts grabbed an early score, recording a goal from the top right of the scoring zone after striking the ball under the goalkeeper to the left post. From there on, both teams were locked in a defensive stalemate. Each team recorded just three shots apiece for the rest of the first half. The second half was more of the same, with Mansfield recording seven shots and The Rock recording four.

As a team, the Mounties led Slippery Rock in shots (12-7), shots on goal (11-4) and penalty corners (10-6) for the game.

Mansfield's goalkeeper Brittany Ryan recorded four saves during her 70 minutes of shutout play.

Up next, SRU faces Kutztown University 11 a.m. Saturday morning for a non-conference matchup at Andre Reed Stadium.
