SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team blanked Clarion University 1-0 Wednesday afternoon at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
With the win, Slippery Rock improves to 3-1-1 on the season overall and 3-0-1 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. Clarion drops to 2-3-1 overall and 1-3-1 in league games with the loss.
Slippery Rock has now won three games in a row. It's The Rock's longest win streak since Sept. 20-Oct. 5, 2016 when SRU won five consecutive games.
SRU's
Kaitlyn Barackman scored the lone goal in the first half. The Rock defense was then able to stave off Clarion's offense en route to the victory.
Slippery Rock had a tremendous attack early when in the 10th minute
Brooke Testa sent a shot in that was saved by Clarion goalkeeper Krista Mosi. Just seconds later,
Skye Kramer fired one on target at Mosi for the save.
The Rock primarily kept the ball in the Clarion zone and finally broke through at 35:30 when
Tess Keeley and
Tyler Spence sent a pass to the top of the box as Barackman put it in for the score. It was Barackman's second goal of her SRU career and first of 2017.
Keeley's assist was her third of the season and 15th of her career. She is now tied for 10th on SRU's all-time assist list.
The Rock did register another shot on goal in the first period at 37:06 from
Shannon McIntyre, but Mosi got the save.
In the second half, The Rock's best chance to score again came in the 74th minute when Testa sent a corner to
Julianna Esposito who fired a shot, but Mosi made the stop.
SRU recorded 17 shots total and 12 were on goal.
The Rock defense was stellar. holding Clarion to just two shots throughout the game.
Goalkeeper Kylie downs was rarely tested as she made just one save on two chances and recorded her third straight shutout victory.
The Rock women are back in action 4 p.m. Tuesday against no. 3 Kutztown University at James Egli Field.
