SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa.- The Slippery Rock University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Lock Haven University Saturday afternoon at the SRU Softball Complex.
The Rock recorded 13 hits and limited Lock Haven to just one hit in Game One en route to an 8-0 shutout in six innings. In Game Two, Lock Haven turned things around with a 4-1 win.
Slippery Rock goes to 6-11 overall, while Lock Haven moves to 7-11.
GAME ONE: Slippery Rock 8, Lock Haven 0 (6 Innings)
The Rock got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
Emily Nagle scored on a stolen base and
Caitlin Baxter reached home on a passed ball. Both Nagle and Baxter got on base with singles up the middle.
Lauren Hawley put Slippery Rock up 4-0 in the fifth inning with a two-run homer to centerfield.
The Rock had a huge sixth inning that saw five hits and four runs. Nagle had a two-run double that scored
McKenzie Garland, who singled up the middle, and
Paige Flore, who pinch ran for
Allie Fischer.
Megan Brown hit an RBI single to right field that scored Nagle. Hawley put a cap on the game when she recorded an RBI single to left center that scored Brown and run-ruled the Lady Eagles.
Baxter was 4-for-4 in Game One with two runs and a stolen base to lead The Rock offensively. Nagle had two hits, two RBI, two runs and a stolen base, while Hawley had two hits, three RBI and one run.
Brooke Dawson allowed just one hit against Lock Haven in her seventh career shutout. She struck out six and walked three in her fourth win of the season.
GAME TWO: Lock Haven 4, Slippery Rock 1
With two outs in the second inning of Game Two, Lock Haven capitalized on a SRU error to score three runs and get out to an early lead.
The Rock got back one run in the fifth inning when
Caitlyn MacKelvey scored on a throw following Nagle's walk.
Lock Haven tallied another run in the seventh inning on a home run by Chloe Kennedy.
Nagle led The Rock with two hits, while Baxter, Fischer and
Machala Andrews each recorded one.
Dawson took the loss in Game Two after surrendering three runs. Flore and
Andria Copelli both saw relief time with 1.1 and 1.0 innings of work, respectfully.
Slippery Rock opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action Friday at California (Pa.) First pitch is slated for 2:30 p.m.
