MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.- The Slippery Rock University softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Snowbird Freeze Out in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Rock (1-4) started the morning with a 5-2 loss to undefeated New Haven before earning a 6-2 win over Shippensburg, in a matchup of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams.
GAME ONE: New Haven 5, Slippery Rock 2
Senior
Caitlin Baxter and junior
Emily Nagle each registered two hits against the Chargers, while senior
Nicole Siciliano and sophomore
Kailey Myers had one hit apiece in the loss.Â
Sophomore
Megan Brown's speediness got The Rock out to a 1-0 start in the first inning when she stole third and advanced home on an error, but the Chargers answered back with one run apiece in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-1 lead.
SRU tied it up in the fourth inning when New Haven made a fielding error that advanced Baxter to home after junior
Amanda Brush's sacrifice bunt.Â
The Chargers scored two runs in the top of the seventh and Slippery Rock left three on base in the bottom half of the inning to cut the rally short.
Junior
Brooke Dawson was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs and striking out three across the final 2.2 innings. Junior
Paige Flore got the start and allowed two runs in 4.1 innings of work.
GAME TWO:Â Slippery Rock 6, Shippensburg 2
Against Shippensburg,
Lauren Hawley led The Rock's offense with two doubles and an RBI, while Baxter recorded her second straight multi-hit game with two hits, three RBI and a stolen base. Myers also had two hits and Nagle, Siciliano and juniorÂ
McKenzie Garland registered one apiece.Â
SRU got out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Baxter hit a two-run double to score Brown and Nagle. The Rock extended the lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning when Hawley hit her RBI double to score Myers.Â
Brown and Baxter each recorded an RBI in the sixth inning. Freshman
Megan Ross also got an RBI single in her collegiate debut to stretch SRU's lead to 6-0.Â
Shippensburg got back two runs in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough as SRU held on to get its first win of the season.Â
Senior
Carly DeRose earned her first win of the season with seven strikeouts.Â
