PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team lost an exhibition game to the the University of Pittsburgh, 94-48, Wednesday afternoon at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
While an exhibition for Slippery Rock (3-1) Wednesday's contest was a countable game for the Division I Panthers, who improved to 5-0 on the season with the win.
Slippery Rock was led by freshman
Brooke Hinderliter, who scored a team-high 15 points, grabbed six rebounds and passed out four assists. Hinderliter went 6-for-11 from the field overall, 1-for-2 from 3-point range and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Of her six rebounds, four came on the offensive glass.
Fellow freshman
LeeAnn Gibson added eight points to go with three rebounds and one block over 21 minutes.
Morgan Henderson had seven points, four rebounds and one block while
Krista Pietropola chipped in five points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench as well.
Slippery Rock shot 30.4 percent (17-of-56) from the field, 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from 3-point territory and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line. SRU forced Pittsburgh into 11 turnovers, but committed 19 turnovers of its own which the Panthers converted into 27 points.
Five different Panthers scored in double figures with Brenna Wise leading the way on an 18-point, five-rebound, four-assist performance. Pittsburgh shot 55.9 percent (38-of-68) from the field overall, 37.0 percent (10-of-27) from 3-point range and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the foul line.
Slippery Rock played relatively close with Pittsburgh in the second and third quarters, but were outscored a combined 42-14 in the first and fourth quarters.
Wednesday's game was the first between Slippery Rock and Pittsburgh since Feb. 8, 1981.
Slippery Rock will have a brief break for the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to competition this weekend with two games at the Ashland Thanksgiving Classic in Ashland, Ohio. Slippery Rock will play host Ashland University Saturday at 1 p.m. followed by a game against Hillsdale College Sunday at 1 p.m.
