SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost to No. 1 East Stroudsburg University, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

Slippery Rock ends its year with an overall record of 6-12 and a 3-7 mark in PSAC contests. East Stroudsburg improved to 15-3 overall and 9-1 in league games with the win.

The quartet of Hannah Downing, Megan McKay, Allison Grant and Hannah Shirk all recorded shots for The Rock against the top-ranked Warriors.

Liz Wolfe made a pair of defensive saves, which were her team-best seventh and eight stops of the year. Goalkeeper Nicole Bream made eight saves while allowing three goals in 70 minutes of competition.

Slippery Rock played even with East Stroudsburg over the opening 10 minutes of the game before the Warriors struck with two goals in 49 seconds off of scores by Robin Stevenson and Karisa Turner to pull ahead 2-0 through 11 minutes of action.

Following the goals, The Rock's defense stiffened up over the remainder of the first half by successfully defending five penalty corners and eight shots to keep the deficit to just two goals heading into the break.

Despite facing near constant pressure, Slippery Rock's defense held ESU scoreless over the first 23 minutes of the second half until the Warriors finally broke through with an insurance goal at 58:14 by Sydney McCarthy on the way to their 3-0 victory.

SRU's best chance for a goal came in the 69th minute, but an attempt by McKay was blocked by an ESU defender before it could get to the goalkeeper and potentially the back of the cage as the Warriors managed to preserve their shutout.

Prior to Saturday's game The Rock's 2016 senior class of McKay, Michelle Couch, Kayla Klaus, Renee Rosenblum and Haylee Underwood were recognized for their contributions to the program.
