Late goal costly for Rock in 2-1 loss at IUP

Slippery Rock surrendered a late goal and lost to IUP 2-1 Sunday afternoon.

INDIANA, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a tough Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference game at Indiana University of Pennsylvania Sunday afternoon, 2-1.

SRU and IUP were tied at one for most of the game until Indiana's Selena West scored a goal with less than two minutes left in regulation to put the Crimson Hawks ahead 2-1, en route to the victory. The loss puts SRU's record at 6-10 overall and 3-5 in PSAC play, while Indiana improves to 8-7 on the season and 3-5 in league action.

Both Indiana and Slippery Rock are now tied for seventh in the conference standings just one game back of sixth place Kutztown with only two games remaining. The top six teams in the conference qualify for the PSAC tournament.

Freshman Savanna Robinson registered SRU's lone goal in the loss. Robinson, senior Renee Rosenblum and junior Kailee Krupski recorded one shot apiece.

Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bream recorded 13 saves for Slippery Rock on 15 shots faced. It was Bream's fifth game this season with 10 or more saves.

Indiana scored first at 15:11 when Sarah Zielinski scored her third goal of the season.

The Rock answered back at 26:08 when Robinson fired a shot that found the back of the cage to tie the game at one. The goal was Robinson's third of the season and second goal in two games. Robinson is now tied for second on the team in total points (eight) with Krupski.

The game remained tied into the break and into the 68th minute until Selena West snuck one past Bream off a pass from Madelyn Mullen. It was West's seventh goal for the year and Mullen's third assist of 2016. The score put IUP ahead 2-1. Slippery Rock had a chance to tie the game and force overtime when it earned its first penalty corner of the game with 35 seconds left to play, but Krupski's shot sailed wide as IUP held on for the victory.

Indiana held advantages over The Rock in shots on goal (15-1) and penalty corners (11-1).

Slippery Rock will head back home for a game against sixth ranked Bloomsburg University 4 p.m. Wednesday.
