SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team surrendered three unanswered second half goals in a 3-1 loss to Edinboro University Wednesday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition at James Egli Field.
The loss drops The Rock's record to 8-6-1 overall and to 8-4-1 in the PSAC. Edinboro improves to 11-2-1 overall and 10-2-1 in league games with the win.
At just over the midway point of the first half,
Dara Demich put The Rock up 1-0 with her fifth goal of the season. Slippery Rock went on to withstand five Edinboro attempts over the remainder of the opening half to take its one-goal advantage into the break.
However, Edinboro quickly answered back to start the second half with goals in the 51st and 56th minute to give the Fighting Scots a 2-1 advantage with 34 minutes remaining in regulation. Any hope of a Slippery Rock comeback was put to rest in the 76th minute when Edinboro added an additional insurance goal to give itself a two-goal lead it would never relinquish.
Madison Johnson recorded two shots following the third Edinboro goal while Demich and
Skye Kramer added one shot each, however all four attempts were off target as the Fighting Scots hung on for the 3-1 win.
Demich's goal was her team-leading fifth of the season. All five of the goals have come over The Rock's last six games. The senior forward now has 31 career goals, the fifth most in Rock history.
Johnson finished the game with a Rock-best three shots. Demich had two attempts as well while Kramer,
Andrea Felix,
Lynn Neef,
Kaitlyn Barackman and
Tyler Spence all had one shot on the day.
Kylie Downs was the goalkeeper of record for The Rock, stopping four shots and allowing three goals in 90 minutes.
Alex Brown scored two goals for Edinboro while Ashley Mutkus had one goal and two assists.
Slippery Rock will look to snap its two-game losing streak with a victory against Lock Haven University 12 p.m. Saturday at James Egli Field.
