Slippery Rock lost a tough non-conference game against IUP Saturday afternoon, 3-1.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University field hockey team lost a non-conference matchup to Indiana University of Pennsylvania Saturday afternoon, 3-1

Indiana scored all three of its goals in the first period and made it tough for SRU to fight its way back into the game. Slippery Rock registered a goal from sophomore Allison Grant off an assist from junior Kailee Krupski in the second half, but was unable to complete the comeback.

Senior Megan McKay led the team in shots on goal (three), while junior Kayla Mack recorded two. Senior Renee Rosenblum, sophomore Hannah Downing and Grant each tallied one apiece.

The Crimson Hawks out-shot Slippery Rock 5-1 in the first half, but SRU held the advantage in the second half, 10-1.  The Rock also led for the game in penalty corners, 12-7.

Junior goalkeeper Nicole Bream recorded three saves on six shots faced.

The loss puts Slippery Rock's overall record at 5-9, while Indiana improves to 7-5 on the season.

IUP got on the board early at 12:37 when Matti Reightler found the cage from a deflection played to the middle of the circle from Kimberly Kelly.

In the 23rd minute Amber Bailey sent a hard high pass inside that got deflected into the back of the cage by Madelyn Mullen and put IUP up, 2-0.

The Crimson Hawks tacked on one more goal before the break at 29:03 when Bream tried to kick a ball away, but Amber Bailey shot it back into the cage and put IUP ahead, 3-0.

Slippery Rock played well in the second half, but only registered one goal at 55:09 when Grant received a pass from the bottom of the circle from Krupski and put the ball into the goal. The goal was Grant's second of the season and it was Krupski's fifth assist for 2016, which is a career-high.

Slippery Rock recorded five shots on goal following Grant's score but IUP goalkeeper Alyssa Lerda stopped all attempts to help the Crimson Hawks close out the 3-1 win.

SRU will get back to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action when it plays a home game against Mercyhurst 4 p.m. Tuesday at Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.
