SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team had its second best shooting day of the season and four players scored in double figures in an 84-61 non-conference victory against Point Park University Saturday afternoon at Morrow Field House.
The win, Slippery Rock's third in the last four games, improves The Rock's record to 11-10 on the season. The 11 wins match the 2014-15 team for the most victories in a season for The Rock in the last seven years. Point Park drops to 15-8 on the season with the loss.
In addition to shooting 50 percent (31-for-62) from the field, Slippery Rock set team season-highs Saturday in field goals made, 3-pointers made (10) and assists (25). SRU's point total was its second highest of the season; Slippery Rock scored 87 points against Mansfield University earlier in the year.
Slippery Rock, which also shot 47.6 percent from 3-point territory, committed just 10 turnovers while forcing Point Park into 16 miscues. The Rock's stellar defensive effort also limited the Pioneers to a 38.2 (21-for-55) field goal percentage.
Lexi Carpenter led all scorers with 15 points to go with six rebounds, six assists and one steal. Carpenter was 5-for-11 from the field and 2-for-3 from 3- point range. She is averaging 22.3 points per game over The Rock's last five contests.
Ciara Patterson just missed out on her first double-double of the season with 14 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals.
Audrey Stapleton came off the bench to score 14 points and pass out a career-high five assists. Also coming off the bench with strong performances were
Krista Pietropola and
Sarah Beckham, both players scored seven points.
Megan Hardiman was The Rock's fourth player in double-figures with 11 points. Fellow starter
Mallory Heinle chipped in nine points and five rebounds.
Isabella Lacarbonara and
Lindsay Homan rounded out The Rock's top perfumers with three rebounds apiece. Every Rock player to dress Saturday played.
The game was close through the opening five minutes of the first quarter, but a 12-2 run to close the period gave Slippery Rock a commanding 11-point lead that it never relinquished. SRU pushed its lead out to 21 points at 43-22 heading into halftime and led by as many as 27 points in the second half on the way to the 23-point victory, its second largest win of the season.
SRU also held advantages over Point Park in rebounds (39-31), steals (9-4), points off turnovers (18-14), points in the paint (30-16), second chance points (11-6), fast break points (14-2) and bench points (29-28).
Carly Forse had 14 points, nine rebounds and two steals for Point Park. Kaitlyn Smith added 11 points as well.
Slippery Rock returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division competition 6 p.m. Wednesday against Edinboro at Morrow Field House.
