CLARION, Pa.—The Slippery Rock University men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game with a 62-49 loss on the road at Clarion University Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division action from Tiffin Gymnasium.
Â
Clarion made just one field goal in the first 11 minutes and shot 21 percent in the opening half, allowing Slippery Rock to get out to a 25-20 halftime lead. The Rock couldn't capitalize on the poor shooting night from the Golden Eagles and the hosts posted a 42-24 advantage in the second half to run away with the game.
Â
Slippery Rock drops to 8-9 overall and 3-8 in PSAC games with the loss. Clarion improves to 10-8 overall and 7-5 in league action.
Â
The Rock posted advantages in shooting percentage and rebounding in the game, but couldn't get out of their own way. The team tallied 29 turnovers in the game, which was the most for an SRU team in more than 10 years dating back to a 2005 loss to Mercyhurst in which the team had 30 turnovers.
Â
Clarion used those 29 turnovers to score 32 points and outscore Slippery Rock 32-9 in points off turnovers, which proved to be the deciding factor in the game.
Â
The Rock shot 41.5 percent from the field (17-of-41), 12.5 percent from 3-point (1-of-8) and 60.9 percent at the free throw line (14-of-23). Slippery Rock posted a 38-28 advantage in total rebounding.
Â
Chaquille Pratt paced SRU with 18 points and five rebounds.
Cornelius Brown added 15 points and seven rebounds and
Naquil Jones scored 10 points. No other Rock players recorded more than three points in the game.
Â
Clarion shot 35.1 percent from the field (20-of-57) after flipping the script at halftime and shooting 48 percent in the second half. The Golden Eagles were 3-of-11 from 3-point (27.3 percent) and 19-of-25 at the free throw line (76 percent).
Â
Rob Agurs scored a game-high 30 points for Clarion and was the only player in double figures for the hosts. BJ Andrews added nine points and Cameron Grumley scored eight points.
Â
Slippery Rock finds itself in eighth place in the PSAC West standings, one game out of a tie for the sixth and final playoff position with three games left in the first round of divisional play. The Rock will look to get back on track when California (Pa.) visits Morrow Field House Saturday night for a 7 p.m. tip.
