SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – It took two fields and nearly four hours, but the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team was able to withstand several lightning delays and a tough Daemen College team to come away with a 2-0 win Saturday evening.

The game began at James Egli Field, but several rounds of lightning resulted in over two hours of delays and forced the game to be moved to Mihalik-Thompson Stadium where it could be finished under the stadium's lights.

The win improves Slippery Rock's record to 2-0 on the season. SRU has not started a season 2-0 since 2006. Daemen drops to 0-1 overall with the loss.

Senior defender Ryan Lutke and senior forward Mike Ilodigwe accounted for Slippery Rock's goals. Lutke converted his second penalty kick of the season late in the second half while Ilodigwe added an insurance goal in the game's final minutes. Ilodigwe finished with a team-high three shots on goal.

Slippery Rock controlled much of the game as evidenced by its 13-3 and 5-2 edges in shots and corners, respectively, but was unable to finish several solid-scoring opportunities until the waning moments of regulation.

Play was even through the first 13 minutes of competition when lighting forced the field to be cleared and the game to be postponed. The delay would last nearly three hours. After the lengthy delay and a change of location play finally resumed. Slippery Rock got off three shots, but none would find their mark and the contest went to halftime scoreless.

The second half was a very physical 45 minutes that resulted in seven cards and a total of four ejections, two from each team. The final 28 minutes was played with nine men on each side.

Slippery Rock controlled possession for the final stages of the contest. Junior midfielder Mike Pcholinsky gave Slippery Rock its best scoring opportunity of the match when he was fouled in the Daemen zone in the 76th minute, which gave SRU a penalty kick. As was the case against Malone, Lutke stepped up to take the shot and delivered another great attempt that resulted in the game's first goal.

SRU remained the aggressors throughout the rest of the contest with Ilodigwe adding the finishing touches by ensuring that the game would end in regulation when he converted breakaway goal at 88:44 en route to the win.

Senior goalkeeper Kyle Hoffer got the start for The Rock and played all 90 minutes for the first shutout of his career.

Slippery Rock will look to remain perfect on the season when it plays at Salem International 5 p.m. Tuesday. A win would give SRU its first 3-0 start to a season since 2004.
