SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Despite trailing by two goals and playing a man down well into the second half, the Slippery Rock University men's soccer team battled back to force overtime and eventually force its way to a 3-2 win Saturday afternoon at James Egli Field.

Slippery Rock improves to 3-1 on the year overall with the win and 1-0 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play. The Red Raiders dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in league competition.

After a scoreless first half, Shippensburg broke open the 0-0 game when James Connor scored in traffic at 53:44. SU then appeared to put the game away with another score in the 84th minute by Mark Furfaro. However, The Rock persevered and cut the lead to one goal when Jacob Thiel headed home a pass from Patrick Sullivan for his first career goal with under two minutes to play.

Slippery Rock's frantic play continued in the final moments of regulation with SRU eventually finding itself in possession of the ball for a throw-in with under a minute remaining in the contest. Nick Kutcher's pass would find Rock goalie Kyle Hoffer, who was playing up on the attempt. Hoffer proceeded to beat his counterpart for the game-tying goal to force overtime.

Following a scoreless first overtime, SRU controlled the second overtime by maintaining possession and firing off three shots. With time running out Shippensburg was called for a handball penalty while attempting to clear another of The Rock's many attempts, which resulted in an SRU penalty kick. As he has done two other times already in 2015, Ryan Lutke once again converted a penalty kick to give The Rock the 3-2 win. Lutke has now made three penalty kicks on the season. His three goals are a team-high.

In addition to his goal that forced overtime, Hoffer stopped one shot for his second win of the season. Slippery Rock had 11 players tally at least one shot on goal Saturday with Mike Pcholinsky and Matt Sangermano leading the way with two attempts on target each.

For the game, Slippery Rock held a convincing 25-12 edge in total shots and a 13-3 advantage in shots on goal. Shippensburg held a 6-4 lead in corners.

Slippery Rock will look to maintain its perfect conference record when it hosts California (Pa.) Tuesday for a 1 p.m. match at James Egli Field.
