SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Senior center
Cornelius Brown scored 23 points and grabbed 22 rebounds as the Slippery Rock University men's basketball team overcame a sluggish first half to cruise to a 94-73 victory against Penn State Greater Allegheny Monday night at Morrow Field House.
The non-conference victory improved The Rock's record to 6-4 on the season. PSU Allegheny fell to 3-6 in the defeat.
The victory was also win No. 144 for head coach
Kevin Reynolds at Slippery Rock. He is now tied for second place in Rock history for career wins with Hank Baierl (1958-70) after just over seven seasons in charge of the program.
Brown was dominant Monday night on the way to his seventh double-double of the season. He went 10-for-14 from the field overall, blocked four shots and had nine offensive rebounds. Brown's point and rebound total were the most by a Rock player since former SRU great Devin Taylor had 19 points and 22 rebounds Jan. 6, 2012 against Cheyney University.
Junior forward
Chaquille Pratt continued his strong season with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and a 1-for-1 performance from the foul line while also grabbing nine rebounds.
Senior guard
Malcolm Richardson did a little bit of everything against the Nittany Lions, finishing with 16 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Off the bench, junior guard
Jordan Marrow and senior forward
Erik Raleigh each registered 10 points with Raleigh also pulling down four rebounds.
A game after shooting 62 percent Dec. 5 against Cheyney, SRU continued its efficient shooting with a 38-for-76 (50 percent) performance from the field.
In addition to a season-high point total, Slippery Rock also pulled in a season-best 57 rebounds and finished with a +26 rebound margin and 18 assists, also a season-best total.
Slippery Rock quickly pushed its lead out to 12 points, 26-14, through the opening 10 minutes of play before PSU Allegheny stormed back to pull to within as little as one point at 33-32 with three minutes to go in the opening half. The run was sparked by a multitude of 3-pointers from the Nittany Lions.
However, Slippery Rock regrouped during the final media timeout of the half and rolled off a 6-0 run to take a 38-32 lead into the break.
PSU Allegheny kept the score close over the first three minutes of the second half until Slippery Rock went on a decisive 15-2 run over the following five minutes to jump out to a 57-42 advantage with 13:21 to play in regulation. Slippery Rock continued to wear the Nittany Lions down while increasing its lead through the remainder of the game en route to the 21-point, 94-73, victory.
Slippery Rock also held advantages over PSU Allegheny in points in the paint (62-24), second chance points (27-18), fast break points (14-9) and bench points (29-25).
Jashaun Fontanez and Curtis Newby had 19 and 16 points, respectively, for PSU Allegheny in the loss.
Slippery Rock will break for the rest of the week to take fall semester final exams before returning to action 7 p.m. Dec. 16 against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division foe Mercyhurst University at Morrow Field House.
