SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Malcolm Richardson scored 20 points while the post duo of
Cornelius Brown and
Chaquille Pratt both recorded double-doubles in a 72-51 win against Daemen College Tuesday night at Morrow Field House.
The win, Slippery Rock's second in as many games, improves The Rock's record to 4-3 on the season. Daemen falls to 1-3 on the year with the loss.
The victory also improves Slippery Rock's record at home to 83-20 dating back to the 2008-09 season. Slippery Rock has lost just three times at home over the last 26 games.
Richardson tallied his fourth 20-point performance of the season on an efficient 8-for-15 shooting performance that included a pair of 3-pointers and two free throws. He also delivered five assists while grabbing five rebounds.
Brown earned his sixth double-double of the year thanks to a 19-point, 11-rebound effort. Brown's six double-doubles are tied for the most in all of NCAA Division II.
Pratt, who has had at least 10 rebounds in each of SRU's last three games, produced his first double-double of the season by scoring 10 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Slippery Rock shot 45.9 percent (28-for-61) from the field while holding Daemen to just a 30 percent (18-for-60). Slippery Rock also outrebounded the Wildcats 46-33.
Daemen jumped out to an early 4-3 lead through the opening three minutes of play before a 6-0 Rock run gave SRU a 9-4 lead it would never relinquish. A smothering Rock defense went on to hold the Wildcats to just 19 points over the final 17 minutes of the first half while a steady effort on the offensive end of the floor resulted in Slippery Rock building its lead up to 12 points at 35-23 at the break.
Daemen briefly cut The Rock's lead down to single digits just under a minute into the second half, but Slippery Rock's advantage was never seriously threatened thanks to a 14-7 SRU spurt over the following six minutes that pushed The Rock's lead to 16 points at 49-33.
Slippery Rock closed out the contest by outscoring Daemen 23-18 over the remainder of the game on the way to a commanding 21-point victory.
Other top performers for The Rock Tuesday included
Dontay Jackson,
Erik Raleigh and
Juwan Strothers. Jackson had five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Raleigh added six points, four rebounds and a game-high three blocks. Strothers chipped in eight points off the bench.
SRU also held advantages in nearly every specialty statistic as well by winning the points in the paint (38-22), second chance points (5-1), bench points (17-16) and fast break points (10-2) battles.
Arif Mehmetaj led Daemen with a team-high 13 points.
Slippery Rock returns to PSAC play when it takes to the road for a pair of PSAC crossover contests against Eastern Division foes West Chester University 7:30 p.m. Friday and Cheyney University 4 p.m. Saturday.
