Rock falls to Bloomsburg in double overtime

Slippery Rock came up short against Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 double overtime loss at James Egli Field.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's soccer team came up short against Bloomsburg University Saturday afternoon in a 1-0 double overtime loss at James Egli Field in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference play.

With the loss, Slippery Rock's record now stands at 6-4 overall and 5-3 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference competition. Bloomsburg exits the weekend at 5-4-1 overall and 4-4-1 in league play.

Both teams tallied eight shots on the day. Sophomore defender Haley Burkholder, senior midfielder Allison Harbart and sophomore midfielder Tess Keeley had two shots each to lead The Rock's attack.

Slippery Rock produced the only shot on goal in the first half, a Harbart attempt that was stopped by Huskie goalie Devon Haviland, and the game headed into halftime tied at 0-0.

SRU remained the aggressors in the second half by maintaining possession and keeping the action primarily on Bloomsburg's half of the field, but shots on goal by Keeley and Burkholder were both stopped. However, freshman goalkeeper Charlotte Elrod made two saves of her own in the second half to keep Bloomsburg off the scoreboard and send the match to overtime.

Following a scoreless first overtime period, Bloomsburg secured the win early in the second overtime when Ashley Sanchez found Allie Barber with a pass into The Rock's zone that allowed Barber to score the game-winning goal 39 seconds into the final period.

Saturday's game was played on a field that was already very muddy due to heavy rain throughout the day and a men's game that was played on it just 30 minutes prior to the start of the women's contest.

Slippery Rock will look to snap its two-game losing streak when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown 4 p.m. Wednesday at James Egli Field. The Rock defeated UPJ 10-0 last season.
