Rock women fall to Gannon, 72-50

Slippery Rock lost to Gannon, 72-50, Wednesday night in a PSAC-West contest at Morrow Field House.

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University women's basketball team lost to Gannon University, 72-50, Wednesday night in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division contest at Morrow Field House.
 
Slippery Rock (7-12, 3-12 PSAC-West) grabbed an early 3-2 lead off of a corner three-pointer by junior guard Taylor Siggers, but Gannon (14-4, 13-2  PSAC-West) quickly responded with a commanding 15-3 run over the following six minutes to take a 17-6 lead that it would never relinquish. GU ended the opening half by scoring 23 of the period's 32 points to take a 40-15 lead into the break.
 
After a sluggish first half, Slippery Rock regrouped and played much better in the final 20 minutes by shooting 42.9 percent (12-for-29) from the field, up from a 20 percent showing in the first half, forcing seven Golden Knight turnovers and holding the opposition to a 28.6 field goal percentage. SRU outscored Gannon 35-32 in the second half in the 22-point defeat.
 
Senior forward D'Asia Chambers scored a team-best 13 points with the reserve duo of sophomore guard Audrey Stapleton and freshman guard Shannon Jack adding nine and eight points apiece.
 
The quartet of Chambers, Siggers, junior forward Megan Hardiman and senior forward Danielle Garroutte tied for a Rock-best four rebounds each. Junior guard Erica Aiello scored six points off of a pair of three-pointers while passing out five assists and committing just two turnovers.
 
Slippery Rock went 9-for-16 from three-point range in what was its best shooting day from the perimeter of the season. In addition to Aiello's two three-pointers, Jack added two triples with Siggers, Chambers, Stapleton and sophomore guard Rebecca Olkosky each hitting one three-pointer as well.
 
Senior center Nettie Blake recorded a double-double of 19 points and 16 rebounds to lead Gannon.
 
Slippery Rock returns to action on the road at 1 p.m. on Saturday against Pitt-Johnstown.
