SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Slippery Rock University men's soccer team defeated Salem International University 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at James Egli Field. The win was SRU's fourth victory in its last five contests.

The non-conference triumph improves The Rock's record to 5-3-0 on the season. Salem International, which competes out of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, fell to 5-2-0 with the loss.

Slippery Rock held advantages in every major statistical category including total shots (12-6), shots on goal (6-1) and corner kicks (7-2).

Leading Slippery Rock to the win was the combination of Peter Boylan and Stephen Donnelly. Boylan scored The Rock's first goal on an assist by Donnelly, who later drove in the game-winning goal with just 11:02 to play in regulation.

Donnelly's three-point day, his third such of the season, gave him 51 career points, which is tied for 21st in Slippery Rock history. For the season, Donnelly has a team-high 14 points on four goals and six assists.

Boylan's goal, his fourth of 2014, continued the junior's career-year in which he has scored three times in Slippery Rock's last four matches.

Neither team recorded a shot for the game's first 15 minutes, but The Rock finally broke through by drawing a pair of corner kicks in quick succession. The second corner resulted in a goal when Donnelly drove a hard pass into the box that found Boylan to beat Tiger goalkeeper Elliott Cooke for the score to put Slippery Rock up 1-0 at the 15:55 mark in the first half.

Slippery Rock took its one-goal lead into halftime and nearly added another score six minutes into the second half when a Dom Francis shot hit the post. However, Salem International managed to tie the game at 1-1 after Alexandre Costet came up with the equalizer in the 63rd minute.

As was the case for much of the day, SRU continued to control possession and eventually broke through for its second goal of the afternoon with Donnelly's late goal that was assisted by Matt Sangermano in the 79th minute.

Salem International fired two shots over the game's final minutes, but neither proved to be threats and Slippery Rock cruised to the 2-1 win.

Goalkeeper Kyle Hoffer made his first collegiate start for SRU, stopping one shot and allowing one Tiger score in 90 minutes to earn the victory.

Donnelly finished the day with two shots on goal. Boylan, Sangermano, Anthony Jack and Mike Ilodigwe tallied one shot on target apiece in support.

In addition to Costet's goal, Salem International was led by Javier Ruiz Perez and Mohamed Bakayoko with two shots each. Salem International received seven yellow cards on the day.

Slippery Rock concludes its three-game homestand Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts Pitt-Johnstown in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference contest at James Egli Field.
