ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – Slippery Rock University's quest for an NCAA Division II women's tennis national championship were dashed Thursday morning when the 34th-ranked Rock lost a 5-0 decision to fourth-ranked Lynn University in quarterfinal action at Sanlando Park.
The loss in the Green and White's first-ever national quarterfinal appearance gave SRU a final 2009-10 season record of 22-6.
Lynn, based in Boca Raton, Fla., improved its season record to 25-3.
Thursday's match rang down the curtain on the most successful four-year period in Rock women's tennis history and marked the end of the collegiate careers of three Rock seniors:
Laura Handy,
Jessica Hilborn and
Casey Runyan.
In addition to being crucial components in the program's first top-eight national finish this spring, Handy, Hilborn and Runyan helped lead the Green and White to four consecutive NCAA tournaments, four appearances in a regional championship match, four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference tournament appearances, two NCAA regional titles and subsequent trips to the NCAA Round of 16 matches, one PSAC championship and two conference runner-up finishes.
They also played important roles in The Rock surpassing the 20-win mark four consecutive seasons, including a school-record 23 wins in 2006-07 and 22 wins in each of the last three seasons, and winning 80% of its dual matches (89-21 record) since the fall of 2006.
