BLOOMSBURG, Pa. -- The Slippery Rock University doubles team of senior
Laura Handy and sophomore
Dunja Drmac reached the finals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Atlantic Regional tournament hosted by Bloomsburg University.
After play resumed following a rain delay Monday, Handy and Drmac upset the top-seeded pairing of Alina Stanila and Axelle Fernandez from California (Pa.) by an 8-4 score to advance to the finals.
The Rock trailed 3-0 in the match before winning seven straight points and eight of the next nine to finish off the upset.
In the final round, The Rock duo fell 8-6 to Nina Kowalski and Laurie Navarro of California.
Handy and Drmac were impressive throughout the four-day tournament, earning a bye in the first round and then reeling off three wins to reach the finals,
The Rock pairing received a first-round bye before they beat West Virginia Wesleyan's Nicole Andreini and A. Shcherbakova by an 8-3 score in the second round. The unseeded Rock duo then received a victory by default over Mercyhurst's fourth-seeded tandem of Megan Raynor and Kim Ezzo.

Jessica Hilborn and junior
Chelsea Gibson won an 8-2 decision over Millersville's Andrea Konas and Melissa Plowman in opening-round action before it fell by an 8-5 score to California's second-seeded duo of Anastassiya Zherdeva and Galina Vishnikina.
In singles action, Handy won two matches before falling to California's Stanila, the top seed, in a quarterfinal match. The score of the Handy-Stanila match was not available.
The only Rock player to record a singles win, Handy defeated Millersville's Plowman 6-0, 6-3 and Indiana's Katie Eaton 10-7 in second- and third-round matches after receiving a first-round bye.
In first-round action, Drmac lost a 6-2, 6-4 decision to Sabrina Arnaud of Kutztown, Gibson lost a 6-1, 6-3 decision to California's Marianna Olivera and Hilborn dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Indiana's Osborne.
The next action for The Rock women will be an Oct. 5 vs. neighboring Grove City. The only home match of the fall season for SRU is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
