Final Stats
Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Meghan McGrath scored both Rock goals Thursday afternoon to lead the seventh-ranked Green and White (5-0, 3-0) to a 2-1 win over visiting and 20th-ranked Edinboro (3-1-1, 2-1) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
The win, coupled with Indiana's 11-0 whitewashing of Clarion, gave The Rock sole possession of first place in the PSAC-West.
The Rock, the No. 2 team in a preseason poll of PSAC-West head coaches, has nine points (three points per division win), while Clarion and Edinboro both have six and preseason favorite Indiana three.
SRU still has two meetings with both Indiana and Lock Haven on its schedule this fall, as well as one more meeting with California, Clarion and Edinboro.
McGrath, a three-time first-team All-PSAC-West selection and the No. 3 all-time scorer in Rock history, scored an unassisted tally in the 50th minute of action in Thursday's game.
She got her second goal of the game and fourth goal of the season in the 62nd minute off a long lead pass from Ashley Paganie.
Edinboro's goal came in the 86th minute off a deflected shot that Rock goalie Lauren McManus was unable to secure.
Both McManus and Edinboro netminder Samantha Cairns finished the game with four saves.
The Fighting Scots, the No. 3 team in this week's NSCAA Division II Northeast Region poll, outshot The Rock, the No. 1 team in the region poll, by a 15-8 margin, but SRU made its shot count as it scored on two of six shots on goal compared to Edinboro's 1-of-5 showing.
The Rock hits the road for a PSAC "crossover" game Saturday at Kutztown before returning home to host Lock Haven in a PSAC-West game on Wednesday.
Notes: McGrath now has 31 career goals and 23 career assists to her credit. She is tied for second place on SRU's career assists chart, two behind Karen Kane-Grimes' school record. Her career goals total is the third best in school history behind Sonya Maher's 40 and Sarah Arsenault's school-record 70. McGrath's 85 career points total trails Arsenault (161) and Maher (103).
