Slippery Rock, Pa. -
The Rock blew a two-goal lead and had to settle for a 2-2 double-overtime deadlock with visiting Shippensburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action Monday afternoon on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
But the good news is: The Rock did not lose any ground in the chase for a PSAC playoff berth and extended its current unbeaten streak to seven games.
The Rock, which had a five-game win streak snapped by Monday's tie, has not lost a game since falling to defending NCAA Division II national champion Dowling (N.Y.) and reigning PSAC king East Stroudsburg in its first two games this fall.
SRU is now 5-2-2 overall, 4-1-2 in PSAC action and in third place in the PSAC standings.
Shippensburg now stands 2-4-2 overall, 2-3-2 in conference play.
Jeremy Deighton, who was named earlier in the day as the PSAC Athlete of the Week for games played through Sunday, gave The Rock a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of action Monday when knocked home a pass from Steve Perri via Patrick Cormac.
Iain Langstone extended The Rock lead to 2-0 in the 56th minute off assists from Cormac and Deighton.
Less than eight minutes later, though, the score was tied at 2-2 as Shippensburg scored twice in the span of three minutes.
Both teams had their chances to score the go-ahead goal in the final 27-plus minutes of regulation play plus a pair of 10-minute overtime stanzas, but neither squad was able to find the back of the net.
The Rock and Red Raiders each fired off 26 shots in the game, with the guests holding a 12-8 advantage in shots on goal. Shippensburg goalie Chris Popolizio turned away 10 Rock shots, while Rock freshman netminder Greg Blum rejected six shots.
The Rock will look to continue its unbeaten streak and start a new win streak on Saturday, when it will host Millersville in a 2 p.m. PSAC game on DiSpirito Field.
