Oct. 9, 2007

Final Stats

Slippery Rock, Pa. - The Rock ended a 29-game losing streak Tuesday afternoon as it scored a 3-1 win over visiting Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.

Ashley Stoner assisted on all three Rock (1-14) goals while Ashley Hanna, Jennifer Venet and Rebecca Zinn each scored one goal.

Freshman goalie Lisa Belcastro also did her part as she chalked up 10 saves.

Tuesday's win was the first for The Rock since a 2-0 season-opening triumph Sept. 2, 2006, over visiting St. Vincent.

The Sept. 2, 2006, win came in Stacey's Hart debut as The Rock's head coach and against the team for which she was head coach in 2005.

Millersville scored the first goal of Tuesday's game, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute of action, before SRU scored three unanswered goals.

Zinn tied the score at 1-1 in the 23rd minute of action before Hanna put up what proved to be the game-winning tally in the 27th minute.

Venet's goal 16-plus minutes into the final half provided an insurance tally.

Final statistics showed The Rock took better advantage of its scoring opportunities than its guests. Millersville had a 26-6 advantage in shots and an 11-4 margin in shots on goal.

The Rock will have little time to enjoy its win: The Green and White's next game is a 4 p.m. Friday contest at PSAC rival Indiana U. of Pa. -- the No. 1- ranked team in the latest National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II national poll.

IUP is one of five Rock foes/PSAC squads ranked in the NFHCA national poll. Defending national champion Bloomsburg is ranked second, followed by Kutztown in third. Mansfield is ranked ninth and Shippensburg 10th.

C.W. Post, which will join the PSAC in the 2008-09 academic year, is the No. 6 team in this week's poll.
