Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Anastasia Urbanik led a four-player double-digit-kill effort Tuesday night that paved the way to a mementous 3-2 win over visiting Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action in Morrow Field House.
The win was SRU's first over Lock Haven since the teams' first meeting in the 1997 season, a strong of frustration that included 22 successive matches.
Tuesday's triumph also gave SRU a third successive 20-win season as it improved the Green and White's overall record to 20-13 (2-6 PSAC-W).
And the win enhanced SRU's bid for an NCAA regional tournament berth. Lock Haven (10-17 overall, 3-6 PSAC-W) was ranked third in the latest Atlantic Regional poll (Oct. 10) while The Rock was ranked eighth.
The top eight teams in the region at the end of the regular season advance to postseason play, and two of those berths go to champions from other conferences.
Coupled with SRU's win last weekend over No. 5 Shippensburg, Tuesday's win bodes well for the Green and White's quest for a third straight trip to the NCAA tournament.
Urbanik led the way Tuesday night with 14 kills, 16 digs, six blocks and two service aces, but she had ample support and assistance.
Louise Schultz finished with 12 kills, 24 assists, 15 digs, five blocks and two aces; Jen Blasko had 12 kills, 20 digs and one ace; Andrea Campbell chipped in 11 kills, 14 digs and two blocks and Anna Bixler handed out 23 assists.
SRU won the first game by a 30-25 score, but then had to overcome a 2-1 deficit to record the win.
Lock Haven took Games 2 and 3 by 30-27 and 30-11 scores before The Rock evened the score at 2-2 with a 30-24 win in Game 4 and won the match by a 15-12 score in the winner-take-all fifth game.
The Rock will take a break from PSAC-West and Division II competition and host NAIA member Point Park in a 7 p.m. match Wednesday night in Morrow Field House.
