A.J. Saunders rushed for 89 yards and three touchdowns Saturday night to lead The Rock to a 34-10 win over hosting Kutztown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action.
Saunders scored on runs of one and 10 yards in the second quarter to help propel SRU to a 20-3 halftime advantage and added an eight-yard TD run in the third quarter to culminate The Rock's scoring.
Damarcus Cleckley added 86 rushing yards for SRU, which recorded its third successive win and improved its record to 3-1. Kutztown fell to 1-2 on the year.
The Rock unleashed a balanced offense attack on Kutztown; SRU compiled 223 rushing yards in the game and added 218 passing yards to finish with a 441-246 total offense advantage.
Nate Crookshank led The Rock passing effort with a 13-of-24, 204-yard, one-TD performance.
Crookshank's completions were spread out among five receivers. Luke Wetzel had four catches for 67 yards, Colin Golden four catches for 40 yards, Paul Favers three receptions for 61 yards and one TD and Ross Hornish (20 yards) and Terry Grossetti (17 yards) each caught one pass.
Backup quarterback Brad Galvan connected with Jermale Cromerdie for a 14-yard completion to round out The Rock's passing attack.
Defensively, The Rock recorded five quarterback sacks (led by a pair by Clint Forsha) and picked off two passes (one each by Seth Randall and Anthony Walls).
A pair of first-quarter field goals by Ryan Daniels (31 and 22 yards) accounted for The Rock's first six points. Daniel also converted all four Rock TDs to finish with 10 points and averaged 58.7 yards per kickoff to help keep Kutztown bottled up.
The Rock will open PSAC-Western Division action next Saturday (6 p.m.) against former SRU defensive coordinator Jay Foster and the Clarion Golden Eagles.
Foster served 17 seasons as The Rock's defensive guru before being named as Clarion's head coach last spring.
