Aug. 24, 2006

Box Score

Slippery Rock, Pa. - True freshmen Iain Langstone and Colin Wilcox each scored a goal in their first collegiate contest to lead The Rock to a 2-0 season-opening win over visiting Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival Kutztown on James W. Egli Soccer Field.

Langstone scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 22nd minute of action off an assist from Justin Riggle.

Wilcox then added an insurance tally in the 52nd minute off an assist from Steve Perri.

Sophomore Brandon McQuillen was called upon to make only three saves in his first collegiate start in goal as The Rock outshot Kutztown by a 15-8 margin overall, 6-3 in shots on goal.

The reigning PSAC champion, SRU travels to Lock Haven on Sunday for a conference contest before opening a four-game homestand on Aug. 30 vs. West Chester.

Notes: In a preseason poll of the conference's head coaches released Thursday, SRU was picked to finish third in this fall's PSAC competition ... The Rock will quickly see if that prediction is valid; SRU's first five games this fall will be against conference rivals ... The Green and White will play nine of its first 11 games on its home turf before going on the road for eight of the final 10 regular-season contests.
