The Rock field hockey team saw its chances of knocking off a nationally ranked opponent and capturing its first win of the season come to a dramatic halt in overtime, with Bellarmine scoring the game winner with eleven minutes left in the period.
The Rock hung tough with the visitors for the entire game, coming back from a 2-0 deficit to enter halftime with a 3-2 disadvantage. The team never quit, scoring first in the second period on a goal by Kathleen Ross, knotting the score 3-3.
The Rock went ahead 4-3 on a goal by Kara Smith, with slightly under eleven minutes remaining in the game. Bellarmine, however, answered back with a goal of their own, tying the score and forcing the overtime.
Leading The Rock's efforts was Ross, who finished the game with one goal and two assists. Also scoring for The Rock were Heather Hassinger and Ashley Stoner, with one goal a piece. Goalkeeper Tara Bailey recorded four saves on the day.
Bellarmine came into the game with a No. 10 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association national poll. This marks the fourth consecutive game The Rock has faced a nationally ranked opponent.
The Rock looks to bounce back from its tough loss, when it squares off against Mansfield Saturday afternoon. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.
