Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Ashley Michaux, the reigning Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "Athlete of the Year," picked up Wednesday afternoon right where she left off last spring as she led The Rock to a 6-3 season-opening win over visiting Allegheny.
Michaux won her No. 1 singles match by 6-1, 6-1 scores and then joined forces with freshman Kayla Blackburn to win the No. 1 doubles match by an 8-4 score.
Blackburn more than held up her end of the bargain, as well, as she recorded a "double-bagel" (6-0, 6-0) victory in the No. 2 singles match.
Sarah Karagianis was also a double winner as she took the No. 5 singles match by 7-5, 6-3 scores and teamed up with Kelli Parnell to win the No. 2 doubles match by an 8-3 score.
Cristina Rhodes' three-set (3-6, 7-6 [7-4], 10-8) win at No. 6 singles round out The Rock's points.
The Rock is idle until Sept. 24-25, when it will travel to Bloomsburg for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's East Regional tournament.
