Rock records 3-1 win at Millersville

Oct. 25, 2005

Final Stats

Millersville, Pa. - Sarah Mangiarelli, Jaimi Wilson and Meggi Howard scored a goal each and Meghan McGrath recorded an assist Tuesday afternoon to lead The Rock to a 3-1 win at Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference "crossover" action.

The win improved The Rock's season record to 10-5-2, the eighth straight season in which SRU has recorded a double-digit win total.

The Rock has only failed to record 10 or more wins in two of 11th-year head coach Noreen Herlihy's 11 seasons at the helm.

Most importantly, though, the win was the second straight for The Rock and gave the Green and White more momentum heading into an all-important two-game home "series" against PSAC-West rival Edinboro.

The Rock and Fighting Scots will meet in the regular-season finale at 2 p.m. Saturday on James W. Egli Soccer Field in Slippery Rock, then meet again three days later in quarterfinal action of the PSAC playoffs.

The Rock, 6-1-2 in PSAC-West action, locked up second place in the PSAC-West with its 7-0 win over Clarion last Saturday.

Edinboro (7-8-2 overall, 5-3-1 PSAC-W) is assured of a third-place finish in the division.

SRU and Edinboro battled to a 0-0 tie in two overtimes in their first meeting this fall.

The Rock quickly took away any and all suspense in Tuesday's game as they scored the first, and ultimately game-winning, goal less than six minutes into the action on the artificial turf at Chryst Field.

Mangiarelli converted a pass from McGrath into the ice-breaking goal after only 5:41 had elapsed off the game clock.

A little over 20 minutes later, at the 26:31 mark, Wilson nailed a shot from straight-on to make it 2-0.

Howard finished off The Rock's scoring effort when she collected a loose ball in front of the goal and deposited it into the back of the net for an unassisted goal.

The Rock outshot Millersville by a 16-9 margin as SRU freshman goalie Jen McCormick was called upon to make only three saves.

A Millersville (3-10-4) goal at the 70:29 mark ruined McCormick's bid for her seventh shutout of the season.
