Slippery Rock, Pa. -
Behind a strong 1-2 scoring punch of Danielle Cooper and Julie Kirwan, The Rock rolled to a 7-0 win Saturday afternoon over visiting California U. of Pa. in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-Western Division action on Bob DiSpirito Field at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
Cooper scored two goals and had two assists and Kirwan added one goal and three assists as The Rock improved its overall record to 9-5-2 and its PSAC-West mark to 6-1-2.
More importantly, Saturday's win -- coupled with Indiana's 3-1 win over Edinboro on Saturday -- assured The Rock of a second-place finish in this year's PSAC-West regular-season competition.
The Rock will open PSAC playoff competition on November 1 against Edinboro on James W. Egli Soccer Field.
Before then, though, The Rock has two remaining regular-season games: Tuesday's PSAC "crossover" game at Millersville and an Oct. 29 home date with Edinboro.
The Rock waltzed to victory Saturday as they fired off 28 shots -- 18 of which were "on goal."
Sarah Mangiarelli scored what would prove to be the only goal The Rock would need when she took a pass from Cooper and buried it in the back of the net in the 12th minute of action.
Three minutes later, Kirwan converted an assist from Cooper into The Rock's second goal.
Cooper and Kirwan traded roles for The Rock's third goal in the 39th minute of action.
Meghan McGrath scored SRU's fourth and final first-half goal on an assist from Kirwan in the final seconds of the opening stanza.
Cooper and Kirwan teamed up in the fifth minute of the second period for SRU's fifth goal.
Mallory Neubert had a hand in SRU's final two goals, scoring off an assist by Kristine Haug in the 53rd minute of action and assisting on a goal by Jayme Timmons in the 78th minute.
Rock goalies Jen McCormick and Sarah Lacy each had a pair of saves as California (5-11-2, 4-6) managed only four shots on goal.
