Stacey Green scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds Wednesday night in a losing cause as No. 7 California U. of Pa. beat The Rock, 67-41, in the opening game of the PSAC-Western Division season.
Erin Frankovich added five rebounds and Amber McFeely handed out five assists for The Rock (5-9, 0-1), which suffered its second straight loss and eighth in its last nine outings.
California, the defending NCAA Division II national champion, recorded its ninth straight win and improved its record to 11-2.
The Rock had a cold shooting night (35 percent from the field, 11 percent from 3-point range and 60 percent from the foul line) against the Vulcans and further hampered their upset bid by committing 31 turnovers.
Green scored the first three points of the game to give The Rock an early lead before California scored the next eight points en route to a 31-13 advantage with two minutes left in the first half.
The Vulcans led by 14 points, 31-17, at halftime and pushed the advantage to 17 (35-18) before The Rock trimmed the difference to 10 points (37-27) with 13:30 left in the game.
California answered The Rock rally with an 8-0 run of its own and enjoyed a lead of 20 or more points throughout the final nine minutes of action.
The Rock returns to action on Saturday when it will host West Chester in a PSAC "crossover" game at 1 p.m. in Morrow Field House.
SRU then concludes its PSAC interdivisional schedule with a 1 p.m. game Sunday against Kutztown.
