Steele's hat trick lifts Rock women past Gannon

Erie, Pa. - Freshman forward Lauren Steele recorded her second hat trick of the season Wednesday afternoon to lead No. 13 Slippery Rock University (13-2-1) to a 6-1 win over hosting Gannon University (2-13) in NCAA Division II women's soccer action.

Steele has now scored 14 goals in her first collegiate season. She also picked up her fourth assist of the season Wednesday.

The Rock will seek to tie the school record for single-season wins on Saturday when it visits Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference rival East Stroudsburg for the regular-season finale.

SRU currently leads the PSAC with a 9-1-1 league mark and has assured itself of a first-round bye and a host role for a Nov. 7 semifinal game of the PSAC playoffs.

Junior forward Sarah Arsenault improved her school-record single-season goals scored total to 20 with a tally Wednesday. Arsenault also recorded an assist (her sixth of the season) on SRU's first goal, which was scored by sophomore midfielder Emily Winterich at the 19:45 mark of the first half.

Freshman forward Nikki Jacobs scored The Rock's final goal on an assist from senior midfielder/forward Heather Herd.

Sophomore midfielder Nicole Spamer assisted on Steele's second goal.

The Rock enjoyed a 2-0 halftime lead and extended its margin to 5-0 before Gannon got its only goal.

Rock sophomore goalie Amanda Wier was forced to make only two saves as The Rock outshot Gannon by a 17-8 margin.
